Now let’s dive right into our detailed HostGator review so that you can decide whether HostGator is the right choice for your website. So without any further ado, let’s get started!
HostGator Review: An Introduction to the HostGator
HostGator was founded by Brent Oxley in 2002 and since then, it has grown into a leading provider of Shared, Reseller, VPS, and Dedicated web hosting. In 2012, HostGator was acquired by Endurance International Group.
Today the company is headquartered in Houston and Austin, Texas, with several international offices throughout the globe and hosts over 10 million domains which are approximately 1% of the world’s Internet traffic.
HostGator has also received several Prestigious Awards from big websites like hostingadvice.com, pcmag.com, and wpbeginner.com. Have a look below;
So it was a quick introduction to the HostGator web hosting. Now, let’s see what are the positive and negative sides of the HostGator web host.
3 Positive Sides of HostGator WordPress Hosting
1. HostGator Performance (Speed and Uptime)
The most important parameter that you should look for in a web host is its speed. This can affect not only the user experience but also your Google rankings and even a study suggest that a 1-second delay in page load time will reduce the conversion rate by 7 percent.
How do you know the speed of HostGator before signing up? Well, we’ve completely covered you here.
For this in-depth review, we created a WordPress website on HostGator Baby Shared, using the default Twenty Seventeen theme, and also uploaded a few contents on that website, including files and images. After that, we put it on a speed testing tool to measure the actual speed of HostGator.
That being said, let’s see how fast your site will load on HostGator.
Note: We used five different speed testing tools to measure the performance of HostGator:
HostGator Speed Test
The first test was on Pingdom.
We test our dummy site on a Pingdom speed testing tool to measure the speed of HostGator, and here are the results:
According to the Pingdom test results, our dummy site loaded in 1.28 seconds for a server in Washington DC, USA. We did not use any caching plugin or speed optimization for this website so the result is pretty amazing.
The second Test was on Web Page Test:
We tested our site for the second time to measure its speed but this time we used webpagetest.org. You can see the results below:
According to the reports, our site loaded in 1.31 seconds which is great.
HostGator Stress Test
However, the above two tests were done on a new website, which had no traffic at all, so just a speed test isn’t enough to judge its performance and that’s why we wanted to see how HostGator would perform on a decent amount of traffic. For this stress test, we used a tool called LoadImpact (now its name has been changed to K6).
This tool sent some virtual users to our testing site and then gradually increased the number of users up to 20 at a time.
Here’s the result of our stress test:
If you look at the above chart carefully, you will see three lines — Blue, Grey, and Aquamarine.
- The blue line indicates the page load time
- The grey line shows the number of active virtual users on the site
- The Aquamarine line represents the average response time
According to LoadImpact, our site did a very good job here and remained stable during the entire test with an average response time of 1.67 seconds.
These results are not too bad if you consider HostGator shared hosting as your web host. If your site starts growing, it is more likely that your site will be slow down and in this order, you can switch back to cloud or VPS for better performance.
That being said, let’s move on and see how HostGator’s uptime will perform.
HostGator Uptime Test
If you look at HostGator’s TOS, you will see that — they have an uptime guarantee of 99.99%.…
…and you’ll receive one month of credit on your account if your site’s downtime goes below 99.90%.
HostGator is known for its solid uptime in the industry but still, we wanted to see if they lived up to their promises. We decided to run our own test on UptimeRobot.com to track the performance of uptime. And guess what?
Our site performed very well and no downtime was recorded in the last 30 days as you can check in the reports given below.
Overall, HostGator has great uptime and they live up to its promises. We’re happy with these numbers.
HostGator Response Time
We did another test to find the actual server response time of our site hosted on HostGator.com. To perform this test, we used another tool called Bitcatcha. It completely ignores the content of the page and focuses only on the response time of the server. Bitcatcha also tells you the average loading speed for all geographic locations.
You can see the HostGator’s server response time results in the snapshot given below:
According to Bitcatcha’s report, our dummy site responded quickly in less than a second for all locations across the globe. It was even more impressive in the United States and Canada.
If your target audience is mostly in the United States or Canada, then HostGator would be like a cherry on the cake for you. Of course, it was a little higher in Bangalore (INDIA) but still, it was less than a second so all in all, your site will load fast for most parts of the world.
2. HostGator Customer Support and Service
HostGator has the best customer support in the industry available 24/7. This includes everything from a knowledge base, live chat support, email ticket, customer portal FAQs, and phone, they have got you covered.
I don’t like to talk on the phone so email tickets and live chat are good for me. We tested their live chat to see how fast their team responds. We asked them a simple question related to their shared hosting services and guess what? I got an immediate response (within 2 minutes) from one of their support agents. Have a look at the chat summary. Those agents were knowledgeable and fast.
Overall, it was a great experience talking to their support team. I like it!
Do you know, HostGator also provides support on Twitter, they have created a dedicated Twitter account handle @HGSupport to assist its customer in a better way. If you are a social media person and prefer to spend more time on Twitter, then this is a great way to reach out to them. You can follow their official Twitter account @HGSupport here.
Sometimes they may not be able to respond quickly which is absolutely okay, but you don’t have to wait for hours for sure. They also have an outstanding YouTube channel where you will find hundreds of video tutorials.
You can find their customer support portal right inside your dashboard which looks like this:
3. Risk-Free 45-Day Money-Back Guarantee
HostGator is confident that you will be pleased with their services and so they offer a 45 days moneyback guarantee. This means you can try and test the full power of their platform for more than a month without any risk.
In case, if you are unsatisfied with their service for any reason within the 45-day money‑back guarantee period, here is how you can cancel your HostGator account:
Log into your customer portal » Hosting (from the left-hand menu) » Manage » Billing » Cancel Package.
- Refunds are only available for new accounts and not for renewals.
- The domain name and domain privacy are non-refundable.
- This refund policy applies to all of their hosting packages.
What are the Main Advantages of Using HostGator?
There are a lot of good things about HostGator like uptime, speed, customer support, and highly affordable rates all top the list. Here’re some of the few advantages of using HostGator that make it worth buying:
1. Free Domain included

2. Let’s Encrypt Free SSL Certificate for life

3. Beginner-Friendly Control Panel: Ease of use
HostGator cPanel is extremely beginner-friendly and can be used by those who have a little bit of knowledge in website development. There aren’t too many unknown buttons — you can easily manage all your websites, create new email accounts, manage subdomains, and so much more, all with the click of a button within your cPanel dashboard.
In my opinion, the interface of their panel is the most beautiful I’ve ever seen. Most likely, every web hosting companies have the same user interface or maybe layout but the functionality can be different. Have a close look at the HostGator cPanel dashboard:
If you feel HostGator is too difficult to use, you can always ping their customer support but I think most people will not find it difficult.
4. HostGator Penny offers at just $0.01 (For one month)
HostGator does offer a one-month trial account for just $0.01 so if you just want to give a try to HostGator, take advantage of the penny offer. You can enjoy every feature that you will get in annual plans, except the domain.
5. Hassle-free Migrations
Migrating your website from one host to another can be a tricky part especially when you’re a non-techie person but hold on. HostGator will migrate your site for free! They’ll help you every step of the way to ensure your site is always available on the web. Free migrations are available for all of HostGator’s plans, from Shared Hatchling to Baby Cloud.

You will be notified via email when your site is successfully transferred to HostGator’s server. Till then, Sit back, relax and let the team handle everything for you.
But, the catch here is that – they do transfer ONLY one website for free, after that they will charge $25 for each site. This is not just in the case of HostGator, but almost every web hosting companies do this but it doesn’t matter, if you want to do real business you have to invest. It’s a secret. Isn’t it?

What other users say about HostGator?
Don’t just take our words, hear what other real users have to say about HostGator web hosting services:
As you can see, HostGator has received many positive reviews from its renowned customers. We like them too.
Any Negative Side of HostGator?
This is an unbiased review of HostGator web hosting. So far, you’ve heard all the great things about them. However, when we were testing it, we also saw some negative sides of HostGator. Let’s take a quick look at some of the following points.
The Cons of HostGator:
1. HostGator also offers you monthly and annual plans but their monthly pricing is much higher than the annual plan. For 1 month you have to pay $10.95 which is a lot more whereas for an annual plan you only have to pay just $3.95 per month.
2. They do up-sell their additional services during the signup process, But there is no need to add all those services to your cart. You can always add later when you need it.
3. Renewal rates are almost double. It simply jumps to $8.95/mo* for 12 months cycle.
4. They will migrate only one website for free, after that it will cost $25 for each site.
5. Their server is based in the US only. If your audience is outside the US, you’ll need a content delivery network (CDN).
6. You will not get the feature of automatic backup in shared hosting, but you can make this work easily with the help of the Updraftplus WordPress plugin.
